About This Destination

A steep seaside slope on southern Awaji Island carpeted with around five million wild narcissus that bloom from late December to late February — one of Japan's three great wild daffodil colonies, with a rooftop deck overlooking the Kitan Strait and Nushima. Reopened in December 2023 after a three-year renovation.
Nada Kuroiwa Suisenkyo is a dramatic narcissus garden clinging to a steep coastal hillside on the southeastern tip of Awaji Island, facing the Kitan Strait. According to local legend the flowers began when a villager scattered wild daffodil bulbs here around 200 years ago; today roughly five million narcissus blanket the 45-degree slope, and the spot is counted among Japan's three great wild narcissus colonies alongside Echizen Misaki in Fukui and Kyonan in Chiba. The blooming season is short and very specific — roughly late December through the end of February — and the garden only opens during those winter weeks, so timing your visit to the bloom is essential (outside the season the slope is simply closed greenery with nothing to see). When it is in flower, the white-and-yellow blossoms spill down toward the deep blue sea, perfuming the cold air. The garden reopened on 25 December 2023 after a three-year renovation that added wide, safe looping paths across the slope and converted a building rooftop into a third-floor observation deck. From the deck the panorama takes in the Kitan Strait and, directly offshore, the small island of Nushima — said in the Kojiki to be the first land created in Japan's kuniumi creation myth. It pairs well with a wider drive around southern Awaji's coastline and the nearby Onaruto Bridge whirlpools.

Frequently Asked Questions

When is Nada Kuroiwa Suisenkyo open and in bloom?

The garden only opens for the winter narcissus season, roughly from late December to the end of February, with the closing date set each year according to how the bloom holds up. Peak is usually mid-to-late January. Outside this window the slope is closed and there is nothing to see, so always check the Minamiawaji city page before making the trip. Opening hours during the season are 9:00–17:00, with last entry at 16:30.

How do I get to Nada Kuroiwa Suisenkyo without a car?

It's difficult — Awaji Island has no train line, and the garden sits on a remote stretch of the southeastern coast. By car it's about 40 minutes from Seidan-Mihara IC. Without a car, your options are a taxi from the Sumoto area or an infrequent seasonal community bus; most visitors rent a car after crossing the Akashi Kaikyo Bridge or take a sightseeing tour. Plan return transport in advance, as taxis are scarce out here.

What's the entry fee and what else is nearby?

Admission is 600 yen for adults (high-school age and up) and 300 yen for children (elementary to junior-high). From the new rooftop observation deck you look out over the Kitan Strait to Nushima, the small island said to be the first land born in Japan's creation myth. Combine the visit with a drive along southern Awaji's coast, the Onaruto Bridge and Naruto whirlpools at Fukura, and Izanagi Shrine further north — making for a full day on the island.
