About This Destination

A roughly 600-meter white-sand beach at the southern tip of Awaji Island, known for AA-grade clear water, a south-seas atmosphere with palm groves and mural art, and night-time sea-fireflies. Swimming season typically runs early July to late August.
Ama Beach (Aman Kaigan) sits at the southern tip of Awaji Island in Minamiawaji, a roughly 600-meter curve of fine white sand with an almost south-seas feel: palm groves rather than pines, and bright mural art along the back of the beach. The water here is some of the clearest in Hyogo Prefecture, rated AA for quality. On early-summer nights the shallows sometimes light up with sea-fireflies (umihotaru), tiny crustaceans that glow blue-white. The supervised swimming season falls in mid-summer, usually early July to late August (the 2025 season ran July 5 to August 25). The 2026 dates had not been posted as of June 2026, so confirm them on the Minamiawaji City beach page before you go. During the season, safety supervisors are on duty from 9:00 to 17:00, and the beach has free changing rooms, cold-water showers (100 yen), coin lockers (100 yen), toilets, and a couple of small beachside shops that rent floats and sell refreshments. Admission and parking are free. Barbecues and fireworks are not allowed, and visitors take their rubbish home. Awaji Island has no railway, so most people arrive by car, about 25 minutes from the Seidan-Mihara interchange.

Frequently Asked Questions

When is Ama Beach open for swimming in 2026?

The supervised season runs in mid-summer, usually early July to late August (the 2025 season was July 5 to August 25). The 2026 dates had not been published as of June 2026, so check the Minamiawaji City beach page before visiting. Safety supervisors are on duty 9:00 to 17:00 during the season.

What facilities does Ama Beach have, and is it free?

Admission and parking are free. During the season the beach has free changing rooms, cold-water showers (100 yen), coin lockers (100 yen), toilets, and small shops renting floats and selling refreshments. Barbecues and fireworks are prohibited and visitors take their rubbish home.

What are the sea-fireflies (umihotaru) at Ama Beach?

Umihotaru are tiny bioluminescent crustaceans that glow blue-white in the shallows on early-summer nights. Southern Awaji's clear water makes Ama Beach one of the spots where you can sometimes see them after dark.

How do I get to Ama Beach?

Awaji Island has no railway, so most visitors drive (about 25 minutes from the Seidan-Mihara IC). By public transport, take a highway bus from Kobe Sannomiya to Fukura, then a local community bus toward the Ama area; the trip takes roughly two hours.
