About This Destination

Kobe's most popular urban beach, a long stretch of white sand along Osaka Bay with views of the Akashi Kaikyo Bridge.
Suma Beach is Kobe's premier seaside destination, a 1.8-kilometer stretch of white sand along the shores of Osaka Bay that has been a beloved recreation spot since ancient times, even referenced in the Tale of Genji. Located in Kobe's western Suma Ward, the beach is remarkably accessible, sitting directly in front of JR Suma Station, making it one of the easiest urban beaches to reach in the Kansai region. During the summer swimming season from July to August, the beach attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors and is lined with temporary beach houses offering food, drinks, and changing facilities. Year-round, the beach offers scenic walking with views of the Akashi Kaikyo Bridge silhouetted against the western horizon and the mountains of Awaji Island across the strait. The adjacent Suma Seaside Park features a recently renovated aquarium and is popular with families for picnics and cycling along the coastal promenade.
