About This Destination

A nostalgic hilltop park above Suma reached by ropeway, a quirky 1966 'Karreta' inclined people-mover, and a chairlift, ending at a rotating observation deck with sweeping views of the Akashi Kaikyo Bridge, Awaji Island, and the Seto Inland Sea.
Sumaura Sanjo Yuen is a nostalgic hilltop park spread across Mt. Hachibuse, rising directly behind Suma in western Kobe. The journey up is half the fun: a ropeway lifts you from beside Sumaura-koen Station to a mid-mountain station, where you transfer to the 'Karreta', a wonderfully odd, rattly inclined people-mover built in 1966 and one of only two of its kind left in Japan, and finally a chairlift to the summit. At the top, the rotating observation deck (Kaiten Tenbokaku) slowly turns above a cafe, opening 360-degree views over the Akashi Kaikyo Bridge, Awaji Island, the islands of the Seto Inland Sea, and on clear days the skylines of Kobe and Osaka. The park is also one of the Kobe area's great cherry-blossom spots, with thousands of trees around Sumaura Park blooming in early April, and it marks the western trailhead of the Suma Alps ridge and the famous Rokko Zen-juso traverse, drawing both families on a retro day out and hikers setting off across the hills.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I get to Sumaura Sanjo Yuen?

Take the Sanyo Electric Railway main line to Sumaura-koen Station (about 25–30 minutes from Kobe Sannomiya via the Hanshin/Sanyo direct service). The Sumaura Ropeway base station is right beside the station exit. Alternatively, take JR to Suma Station and continue one stop west.

How do you get to the summit, and what is the Karreta?

Reaching the top takes three stages: the Sumaura Ropeway to the mid-mountain station, then the 'Karreta', a slow, famously bumpy inclined people-mover from 1966 (one of only two left in Japan), and finally a chairlift to the top of Mt. Hachibuse. Combination tickets cover all three, or you can ride just the ropeway for the main viewpoint. Allow about two hours round trip to enjoy the observation deck.

What are the views like, and when should I visit?

The big draw is the panorama: the Akashi Kaikyo Bridge (the world's longest suspension bridge until 2022), Awaji Island, and the Seto Inland Sea, with Kobe and Osaka visible on clear days. Early April is spectacular when thousands of cherry trees bloom around Sumaura Park, and autumn-to-winter air gives the crispest views. The rotating observation deck has a cafe, and the night view is excellent, so check seasonal evening hours before you go.
