About This Destination

A hilltop castle ruin on Awaji Island with Japan's oldest remaining concrete-built tenshu replica and sweeping views across the Seto Inland Sea to Shikoku.
Sumoto Castle sits atop Mount Mikuma on Awaji Island, originally built in 1526 by Atagi Nobuyoshi, a retainer of the Miyoshi clan. The castle played a strategic role controlling the Kii Channel between Awaji Island and the mainland. Its hilltop position at 133 meters elevation offers commanding 360-degree views across the Seto Inland Sea, with Shikoku visible to the south and the Kobe coastline to the north. The current tenshu (castle tower) was reconstructed in 1928 and is notable as the oldest remaining example of a concrete-built replica castle tower in Japan. While the interior is not open to visitors, the surrounding stone walls and grounds are well-preserved and freely accessible. The climb from Sumoto city center takes about 30 minutes on foot through forested paths, or visitors can drive to a parking area near the summit. Cherry blossoms in spring and the sunset views make this one of Awaji Island's most rewarding scenic spots.
