About This Destination
The legendary 'Castle in the Sky', famous for floating above a sea of clouds on autumn mornings.
Takeda Castle Ruins, often called the 'Machu Picchu of Japan' or 'Castle in the Sky', is a mountaintop fortress ruin at 353 meters elevation that has become one of Japan's most photographed sights. Built in 1441 and abandoned after the Battle of Sekigahara in 1600, only the impressive stone wall foundations remain, stretching over 400 meters along the mountain ridge. The castle is most famous for the sea of clouds that forms below on autumn mornings between September and November, making the ruins appear to float in the sky. Arrive before sunrise for the best chance of seeing the phenomenon. The hike from JR Takeda Station takes about 40 minutes via steep mountain trails, or take the seasonal Tenku Bus partway. The ruins are closed in winter from January to mid-March for safety. Open hours vary by season, typically from early morning.
