About This Destination

Japan's best preserved feudal castle, a UNESCO World Heritage Site known as the White Heron Castle for its brilliant white exterior.
Himeji Castle is Japan's best preserved feudal castle, dating back to 1333 and designated both a UNESCO World Heritage Site and National Treasure. Known as the White Heron Castle due to its brilliant white exterior and elegant wing-like rooflines, the castle complex consists of 83 buildings spread across multiple baileys. The main keep stands six stories high with a maze-like interior designed to confuse invaders. The castle underwent a major restoration completed in 2015, restoring its dazzling white plaster to original brilliance. The surrounding grounds feature beautiful cherry trees that make spring visits especially memorable. It is a 20-minute walk from JR Himeji Station along a straight boulevard with the castle visible the entire way. Allow 2-3 hours for a thorough visit.
