About This Destination

Preserved cars from the Himeji Monorail (1966-1974), a futuristic transit system that operated for only 8 years, now displayed at the former Tegara Station site.
The Himeji Monorail was a short-lived but ambitious transit project that connected Himeji Station to Mount Tegara for the 1966 Himeji Expo. Using the distinctive Lockheed straddle-type design — cars riding on top of an elevated concrete beam rail — the futuristic system was intended to extend across the city but financial difficulties led to its closure in 1974 after just 8 years of operation. For decades, the abandoned elevated track and stations remained as urban ruins, becoming objects of fascination for infrastructure enthusiasts and urban explorers. In 2024, the remaining track structures were finally demolished, but preserved monorail cars are now permanently displayed at the former Tegara Station site on Mount Tegara (Tegarayama). The display includes original cars in their distinctive retro-futuristic livery, offering a glimpse into Japan's optimistic postwar transportation experiments. The site is part of the Tegarayama Central Park complex, which also includes a botanical garden, aquarium, and the Himeji City Peace Museum. A unique piece of transportation history rarely found elsewhere.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I get to the Himeji Monorail Memorial?

From JR Himeji Station, take the Sanyo Electric Railway to Tegarayama Station — about 5 minutes — then walk roughly 10 minutes south through Tegarayama Park to the former Tegara Station site. Walking the whole way from JR Himeji Station takes about 25 minutes through the park. There's no dedicated parking; use park lots nearby if driving.

When is the best time to visit the Himeji Monorail Memorial?

Spring (cherry blossoms in Tegarayama Park) and autumn give the most pleasant weather and prettiest park surroundings. Indoor displays are open year-round during Tegarayama Park visitor hours, but check ahead — the exhibit has limited opening days, often weekends and holidays only. Mornings on weekends are quietest.

What's the entry fee for the Himeji Monorail Memorial?

Entry is free. The preserved monorail cars and the former Tegara Station building can be viewed without charge during opening hours. Tegarayama Park itself is also free to enter, so this makes a budget-friendly half-day combination with other park attractions.

Why was the Himeji Monorail abandoned?

The line was built for the 1966 Himeji Expo using Lockheed's straddle-type beam-rail design (cars on top of an elevated concrete rail, not hanging below), but high construction debt, very low ridership outside the expo, and exposure to the elements led to operations ending in 1974 — only 8 years after opening. Most infrastructure was demolished, but the cars and Tegara Station were preserved here as a record of one of Japan's shortest-lived rail lines.
