About This Destination

A beautifully designed traditional Japanese garden featuring nine separate walled gardens, built on the former site of samurai residences beside Himeji Castle.
Koko-en Garden sits next to Himeji Castle, built in 1992 for the city's 100th anniversary. The garden occupies the former west residence (Nishi-Oyashiki) where samurai lords once lived. Nine separate walled gardens, each with its own theme, connected by corridors and gates. Highlights: Oyashiki-no-niwa with pond and waterfall, Cha-no-niwa tea ceremony garden, Natsuki-no-niwa summer garden with bamboo. Designed in Edo period style using borrowed scenery (shakkei) to frame Himeji Castle. Tea house serves matcha and sweets. Combined tickets with Himeji Castle available.
