About This Destination

One of the three Kumano Grand Shrines, perched on a mountainside next to Nachi Falls and Seiganto-ji's three-story pagoda—the most photographed view in the Kumano region.
Kumano Nachi Taisha is one of the three sacred Kumano Grand Shrines and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, situated about 350 meters above sea level on the slopes of Nachi Mountain. The shrine enshrines twelve Kumano deities and the spirit of Nachi Falls itself, reflecting the deep connection between Shinto worship and the natural landscape. Adjacent to the shrine stands Seiganto-ji Temple, whose elegant three-story pagoda framed against the 133-meter Nachi Falls creates one of Japan's most photographed scenes. Visitors typically approach via the ancient stone-paved Daimonzaka slope, lined with towering cedar trees that have witnessed centuries of pilgrims walking the Kumano Kodo. The shrine's treasure hall displays sacred artifacts and historical items for a small additional fee.
