About This Destination

UNESCO-listed ancient pilgrimage trails through sacred mountains, linking grand shrines of the Kii Peninsula.
The Kumano Kodo is a network of ancient pilgrimage trails on the Kii Peninsula, designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site alongside Spain's Camino de Santiago as one of only two pilgrimage routes with such recognition. The trails connect the three Grand Shrines of Kumano: Hongu Taisha, Nachi Taisha, and Hayatama Taisha. Winding through dense cedar forests, past sacred waterfalls including the 133-meter Nachi Falls, and over mountain passes, the routes offer a profound spiritual and natural experience. The trails range from gentle day walks to multi-day treks with accommodation in traditional guesthouses.
