About This Destination

Towering 50-meter sea cliffs along the Shirahama coast with an elevator descending to a cave once used by Kumano pirates.
Sandanbeki presents one of Shirahama's most dramatic natural spectacles: sheer cliffs dropping fifty meters straight into the churning Pacific, the rock face extending roughly two kilometers along the coast. From the top, the view is all ocean and spray, waves exploding against the base far below. An elevator descends 36 meters through the cliff face to Sandanbeki Cave, a network of sea caverns that served as a hidden base for the Kumano Suigun during the Heian and Kamakura periods. This formidable force of warrior monks and pirates controlled these waters, and the caves provided perfect concealment for their vessels. Inside, waves crash into rock chambers with tremendous force, and a small shrine to Benzaiten, goddess of water and fortune, occupies a quiet alcove. The contrast defines the experience: serene cliff-top views above, violent oceanic power revealed below.
