About This Destination

A small island in Shirahama Bay with a wave-carved hole through its center. During equinoxes, the sun sets directly through the arch.
Engetsuto, also known as Takashima, is an uninhabited islet just offshore in Shirahama Bay that has become one of the most recognized symbols of the Nanki Shirahama coast. The island measures approximately 130 meters from north to south and 35 meters east to west, with a maximum height of about 25 meters. Its most distinctive feature is a circular hole eroded through its center by centuries of wave action, creating a natural arch that gives the island its name, meaning full moon island. The island is particularly famous as a sunset viewing destination, especially during the spring and autumn equinoxes when the setting sun passes directly through the arch, creating a magical golden glow. Visitors can enjoy the view from several points along the shoreline or take a glass-bottom boat tour for a closer look.
