Shionomisaki

Shionomisaki is the southernmost point of Honshu, a broad grassy headland at Kushimoto where the land ends in cliffs above the Pacific. The open meadow known as Boro-no-shiba spreads to the horizon and is used for camping and stargazing, while a white lighthouse first lit in 1873 stands at the point and can be climbed for a giddying sweep of sea. Nearby the Shionomisaki Observation Tower rises about a hundred metres above sea level for views taking in the cape, the lighthouse and the island of Kii-Oshima. The area is part of the Yoshino-Kumano National Park and pairs well with the rock pillars of Hashigui-iwa a little to the east.
