About This Destination

The head shrine of over 3,000 Kumano shrines across Japan, serving as the spiritual endpoint of the Kumano Kodo pilgrimage trails.
Kumano Hongu Taisha is the spiritual heart of Japan's Kumano faith, the head shrine of more than 3,000 Kumano shrines scattered across the country and the most revered of the three Kumano Grand Shrines. Where its sister shrines display bright vermilion, Hongu Taisha presents a more subdued beauty: unpainted cypress bark roofing surrounded by ancient cedar and cypress forest, an atmosphere of deep antiquity that pilgrims have sought for over a thousand years. The shrine originally occupied a site at nearby Oyunohara on the riverbank, but a devastating flood in 1889 swept away the buildings and prompted relocation to the current hilltop. At Oyunohara, the world's largest torii gate rises 33.9 meters to mark the sacred ground where the shrine once stood, a haunting presence in the river valley. The approach to the current shrine leads up shaded stone stairs through towering trees, each step carrying visitors deeper into what feels like another world entirely.
