About This Destination
The third of the three Kumano Grand Shrines, known for its striking vermilion buildings and an 800-year-old sacred nagi tree.
Kumano Hayatama Taisha is one of the three Kumano Grand Shrines, located in Shingu city where the Kumano River meets the Pacific Ocean. The shrine's vivid vermilion buildings stand out dramatically against the surrounding greenery, creating a striking contrast that is especially photogenic. On the precincts stands a sacred nagi tree designated as a national natural monument, estimated to be over 800 years old and believed to be the largest of its species in Japan. The shrine's treasure hall houses over 1,200 artifacts including national treasures such as lacquerware and cypress fans dating back to the Muromachi period, offerings left by generations of pilgrims. As the shrine associated with the present life among the three Kumano shrines, many visitors come to pray for good fortune and new beginnings.
