About This Destination

A shopping complex from 1966 whose basement to fourth floor hold some 200 shops, a large share of them selling used manga, figures, vintage toys, anime goods and watches. Mandarake alone runs more than 30 separate sections here. About 5 minutes on foot from Nakano Station's North Exit.

Leave Nakano Station by the North Exit and the covered Sun Mall shopping street runs straight to the door of Nakano Broadway, about five minutes away. The building opened in 1966, and its shops still fill the basement through the fourth floor: the official directory has 206 listings. What turned it into a collectors' destination was Mandarake, a used-manga shop that opened here in 1980 in a space of about two tsubo, under seven square meters. Mandarake now has more than 30 sections spread over the 2nd, 3rd and 4th floors, each with its own speciality, from animation cels and figures to retro toys, cosplay and trading cards. Between them are small dealers in watches, games and other collectibles, and the basement has food shops. The upper floors are a maze of narrow corridors with low ceilings, and it is easy to lose an hour on a single floor. Timing matters: Mandarake opens at 12:00 and closes at 20:00, and a 10:00 visit finds rows of shutters still down. Rare items are priced for collectors, so do not expect bargains on the famous pieces.
