Sunshine City
About This Destination
Sunshine City is less one sight than a day's worth of indoor options stacked around Sunshine 60, the tower that was Japan's tallest building when the complex opened in 1978. The observatory on top is now called Tenbou Park, 251 m above sea level. A ticket costs 700 yen on weekdays and 900 yen at weekends, but the price rises to 1,200 yen on peak days such as holiday weekends, so check the calendar first. Below it, the Alpa and Alta malls fill the lower floors. Pokemon Center Mega Tokyo, on Alpa's 2nd floor, is the reason many visitors come at all; new Pokemon card products there are often sold by lottery rather than simply put on the shelf. Namja Town, Bandai Namco's indoor theme park, and the Sunshine Aquarium on a rooftop round out the list, each with its own ticket. The place is big and the signs take some reading. Allow about 8 minutes on foot from Exit 35 of Ikebukuro Station just to reach the entrance, and more to find the floor you want. The underground passage from Higashi-Ikebukuro Station is quicker, at about 3 minutes.
