Miraikan
About This Destination
Look up from the ground floor and the Earth hangs in the air. Geo-Cosmos is a globe about 6 m across, built from 10,362 OLED panels, each 96 mm square, with more than 10 million pixels between them, and it is the image most people take home from Miraikan. The museum opened on July 9, 2001 and is run by the Japan Science and Technology Agency. It deals with science still in progress rather than its history, and its science communicators work the galleries, ready to talk through an exhibit. The permanent exhibitions are grouped under three headings: Explore the frontiers, Create your future and Discover your Earth. The Dome Theater shows full-dome 3D films and planetarium programmes, with reserved seats, for 310 yen on top of the regular ticket. Regular admission to the permanent exhibitions is 630 yen for adults and 210 yen for ages 18 and under, and under-18s get in free every Saturday.
