Rainbow Bridge
About This Destination
The Rainbow Bridge opened in August 1993 as a two-level suspension bridge with a 570-meter main span. The Shuto Expressway Daiba Route runs on top, while the lower deck carries a local road, the Yurikamome line and a footpath on each side. The north route faces the city: Takeshiba and Shibaura piers, the Harumi passenger terminal and the towers behind them. The south route looks over Odaiba Seaside Park, the main shipping channel into the port and, further off, the container cranes at Oi. From the Shibaura entrance to the Odaiba entrance is 1.7 km, about 20 to 30 minutes on foot, and there is no charge. Hours follow the season, 9:00 to 21:00 from April to October and 10:00 to 18:00 from November to March, with last entry 30 minutes before closing. Practical points: toilets are only at the Shibaura end, neither entrance has parking, and tripods, smoking and alcohol are banned. Bicycles must be pushed on a rented stand. The slope is steep enough that wheelchair users are asked to bring a helper. Expect constant road noise. Crossing toward Odaiba around sunset, as the lights come on along the bay, is the walk to aim for.
