About This Destination

333-meter communications tower modeled on the Eiffel Tower, with two observation decks for views over Tokyo.
Tokyo Tower is a communications and observation tower modeled after the Eiffel Tower, standing at 333 meters. It was the tallest structure in Japan from its completion in 1958 until Tokyo Skytree surpassed it in 2012. The tower features two observation decks: the Main Deck at 150 meters and the Top Deck at 250 meters, both offering panoramic views of Tokyo including Tokyo Bay, the Rainbow Bridge, and on clear days, Mount Fuji. The FootTown building at the base houses restaurants, shops, and a wax museum. The tower is beautifully illuminated at night with seasonal lighting designs. Located in the Shiba-koen area near Zojo-ji Temple, it is a short walk from several subway stations. The surrounding area offers great vantage points for photographing the tower, especially from Shiba Park.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I get to Tokyo Tower?

Closest stations: Akabanebashi (Toei Oedo Line, 5 min walk), Onarimon (Toei Mita Line, 6 min), Kamiyacho (Hibiya Line, 7 min), and Daimon (Toei Asakusa/Oedo Lines, 10 min). From Tokyo Station: Marunouchi Line to Kasumigaseki, transfer to Hibiya Line to Kamiyacho — 15 min total (¥210). The free Tokyo Tower-Roppongi shuttle bus from Roppongi Hills (every 30 min, 11:00–18:00) is also handy for combining with Roppongi shopping.

What's the entry fee and which deck should I choose?

Main Deck (150m): ¥1,500 adult — sufficient for a panoramic view; covers 70% of the experience. Top Deck Tour (250m): ¥3,000 adult (includes Main Deck access, guided elevator ride with light show). Open 9:00–22:30 daily (last entry 22:00). Top Deck requires advance reservation online at least 1 day ahead during weekends/holidays. Free entry to FootTown souvenir shops and the lobby; the One Piece Tower attraction inside is now closed.

When is the best time to visit?

Sunset (45 minutes before, year-round) for golden views over Tokyo. Mount Fuji visibility is best on clear winter mornings. Tokyo Tower itself is most photogenic from outside at dusk-to-evening (16:30–19:00) when the orange-and-white tower lights up against the deep blue sky. The Daimon walking approach with Zojo-ji Temple in the foreground is the classic shot. Avoid mid-day weekends when queues for the elevator can hit 30+ minutes.

What's nearby Tokyo Tower?

Zojo-ji Temple (5 min walk, free) — the historic Tokugawa shogun family temple with 6 shogun graves; the temple's Sangedatsumon Gate framing the tower is one of Tokyo's most photographed views. Shiba Park (free, all around the tower) for picnics. Roppongi Hills (15 min walk) for shopping and Mori Art Museum. Atago Shrine (10 min walk) with its dramatic 'Stairway of Success'. The free Tokyo Metropolitan Government observation deck (45 min by subway) offers a comparable but cheaper view.
