The Fastest and Easiest Way to Kyoto From Kansai International Airport (2026 Guide)

Traveling from Kansai International Airport to Kyoto is simple and convenient. The most direct option is the Haruka Limited Express, which connects the airport directly to Kyoto Station in about 75 minutes with no transfers.

This guide walks you through the process step by step, from arriving to the airport to boarding your train.

1. Arrival

After passing through immigration and customs and collecting your luggage, enter the airport arrivals area. Look for signs pointing to Railways. Take the escalator to the second floor, then cross the bridge that connects the airport terminal to the train station.

2. JR and Nankai Stations

At the station you will see two railway companies:

• JR (Japan Railways) – used for trains to Kyoto
• Nankai Railway – mainly for trains to Osaka (Namba)

For Kyoto, you will use the JR side of the station, which is on the left side of the picture.

3. Find the JR Ticket Machines

Once inside the JR station area, you will see the ticket machines where you can purchase or collect train tickets. The JR ticket machines used in this guide can be found on the right side in the picture.

4. Claim a Ticket Purchased Online

If you purchased your ticket in advance through the JR reservation system, you can collect it at the ticket machine. Please note that you will need the physical credit card used to purchase the tickets as must be inserted into the machine.

Find the green ticket machine and choose the language. This guide uses English.

If you purchased your ticket beforehand online, choose the highlighted "Receive reserved ticket(s)" option.

In case you haven't purchased your tickets yet, you can also buy them either directly from the ticket machine or from the JR Ticket Office.

Next, insert the credit card you used to purchase the ticket into the ticket machine, the slot is highlighted in the picture. The machine will then ask you for your four-digit identification number or last four numbers of your telephone number. After that, you can print your tickets.

4. The hard part is now over! You should now have two tickets: the standard/base fare ticket and the limited express ticket. You will need to put these tickets on top of each other and insert them into the ticket machine at the same time. Remember to pick them up when you go through the gate!

The train has reserved seats, non-reserved seats, and a premium car. Follow the platform signs and announcements and board the car that matches your ticket type.
