About This Destination

Kyoto's western escape, where towering bamboo groves, a graceful river bridge, and hillside temples create one of Japan's most beloved landscapes.
Arashiyama lies along the banks of the Katsura River on Kyoto's western edge, a district that has drawn visitors since Heian-era aristocrats built their summer villas here. The bamboo grove remains the signature attraction: towering stalks arch overhead to create a corridor of filtered green light, an otherworldly passage that takes about ten minutes to walk through but lingers in memory far longer. The Togetsukyo Bridge spans the river with mountains rising behind it, a scene particularly beautiful during cherry blossom season and autumn foliage. From this central point, visitors can explore Tenryu-ji Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage site with one of Kyoto's finest Zen gardens, or climb to Okochi Sanso, the hillside estate of a silent film star that includes matcha tea with the admission. The area rewards those who rent bicycles, as attractions are spread across flat terrain. The scenic Sagano railway offers a leisurely way to take in the valley. Just fifteen minutes by train from central Kyoto, Arashiyama deserves at least half a day.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I get to Arashiyama from Kyoto Station?

Take the JR Sagano/San-in Line from Kyoto Station to Saga-Arashiyama Station (about 15 minutes, 240 yen). The bamboo grove is a 10-minute walk from the station via Tenryu-ji Temple. Alternatively, take the Randen tram from Shijo-Omiya to Arashiyama Station for a more scenic, slow approach. Coming from central Kyoto, the Hankyu Arashiyama Line via Katsura is also convenient.

How much time should I spend in Arashiyama?

Plan at least half a day (4–5 hours) for the main sights: the bamboo grove, Togetsukyo Bridge, and Tenryu-ji Temple. A full day allows time for the Iwatayama Monkey Park, Okochi Sanso villa, the Adashino Nenbutsu-ji and Saga-Toriimoto preserved district up the hill, and the scenic Sagano Romantic Train. Try to start before 9 AM to enjoy the bamboo grove in relative quiet.

When is the best time to visit the bamboo grove?

Early morning before 8 AM offers the most peaceful experience and best photos with far fewer visitors. The grove is always open and free to walk through. After 9 AM, especially on weekends and during foliage season, it gets extremely crowded. Note: the popular Arashiyama Hanatouro illumination festival ended after its December 2021 edition; smaller seasonal lighting events still occur in winter, but the headline event no longer runs.

What food is Arashiyama known for?

Yudofu (silken tofu hot pot) at temple-side restaurants like Shoraian or Yudofu Sagano is a Kyoto classic. Try yatsuhashi cinnamon-mochi sweets at Honke Nishio or matcha sweets along the riverside. The shopping streets near the station have soba, tonkatsu, and Kyoto-style obanzai. Stalls at the bamboo grove entrance sell delicious matcha soft-serve and senbei rice crackers.
