About This Destination

The museum Yayoi Kusama founded in 2017 in a quiet corner of Shinjuku, showing her work in two exhibitions a year across five small floors. There are no tickets at the door: timed 90-minute slots cost 1,100 yen, go on sale online on the 1st of each month for the month after next, and often sell out. Kusama died on August 14, 2026, aged 97.

The building is easy to walk past: a tall, white, narrow block on a residential street between Waseda and Kagurazaka, with the name in small letters. Yayoi Kusama, born in Matsumoto in 1929, opened it in October 2017 as her own museum, and it holds two exhibitions a year from her collection. She died on August 14, 2026, at 97, and the museum carries on under her foundation. Inside, you work your way up from the 1st floor by stairs or elevator, and come back down by elevator only; there is not much floor space, which is why entry is capped by timed tickets. The 5th floor is partly outdoors and closes in bad weather. Booking is the hard part. Tickets cost 1,100 yen, are sold only on the museum website, go on sale at 10:00 Japan time on the 1st of each month for the month after next, and popular dates are gone quickly. The museum opens only Thursday to Sunday plus national holidays. Ninety minutes is plenty. Photos are mostly not allowed, apart from marked spots, and there is no waiting area, so do not arrive early.
