About This Destination
The Nichinan Coast stretches over 100 kilometers along Miyazaki's Pacific shore, famous for its dramatic wave-eroded rock formations known as the Devil's Washboard.
The Nichinan Coast is one of Kyushu's most spectacular scenic drives, stretching along Route 220 from Aoshima in the north to Cape Toi in the south. The coastline's most iconic feature is the Devil's Washboard, a formation of undulating sandstone ridges created over seven million years of wave erosion that extends for roughly eight kilometers around Aoshima Island. Horikiri Pass offers panoramic viewpoints over the subtropical coastline fringed with Phoenix palms and Washington palms, creating an atmosphere reminiscent of Southeast Asia. Along the drive, visitors can explore the tropical Aoshima Island and its shrine, see replica Moai statues at Sun Messe Nichinan, and watch wild horses roam freely at Cape Toi.
