About This Destination

A dramatic volcanic gorge with columnar basalt cliffs, a stunning waterfall, and rowing boats for a unique perspective.
Takachiho Gorge is a narrow gorge carved by the Gokase River through volcanic basalt columns that rise up to 100 meters high. The highlight is the 17-meter Manai Falls that cascades into the gorge, creating a misty, photogenic scene especially when sunlight filters through the trees. Rental rowing boats allow visitors to paddle along the gorge for a spectacular view from water level. Takachiho is also steeped in Japanese mythology as the place where the sun goddess Amaterasu's grandson descended from heaven, and the nightly Yokagura dance performances at Takachiho Shrine preserve these ancient stories. A walking trail runs along the top of the gorge. The gorge is remote, with no direct train access; the nearest JR station is Nobeoka, followed by a 90-minute bus ride.
