About This Destination
Built inside a natural cave overlooking the Pacific Ocean, Udo Shrine is one of Japan's most dramatically situated shrines and a sacred site associated with fertility and safe childbirth.
Udo Shrine is a remarkable Shinto shrine built within a cave along the rugged Nichinan coastline in southern Miyazaki Prefecture. According to mythology, the cave is the birthplace of Ugayafukiaezu, the father of Emperor Jimmu, Japan's legendary first emperor. Visitors descend a dramatic staircase carved into the coastal cliffs to reach the main hall, which is tucked inside the natural grotto with views of crashing waves and unusual rock formations below. A popular ritual involves throwing undama, small clay balls, toward a target on the rocks below; successfully landing one is said to grant your wishes. The shrine's vivid vermillion structures against the dark cave walls and blue ocean create an unforgettable scene.
