Michi-no-Eki Phoenix
About This Destination
The view does the work at Michi-no-Eki Phoenix. From the terrace you look straight down on the Oni no Sentakuita, the Devil's Washboard: long ridges of rock that run out into the sea like the ribs of a washboard and show best at low tide. Phoenix palms, jacaranda and bougainvillea are planted around the site, and the Pacific fills the rest of the frame.
The station began in 1965 as the privately run Phoenix Drive-in, from the era when this coast was sold as a honeymoon destination, and the city later took it over as a roadside station. The product hall sells Miyazaki souvenirs, and the soft serve counter is the usual reason to linger; flavors have included Hyuganatsu citrus and mango. The upstairs restaurant has been closed since 2022, so do not plan on a sit-down lunch.
The building is 60 years old, and Miyazaki City is looking for a private partner to replace it with a new tourism facility. In October 2026 it was still open, but check the city's notices before a long detour. The road outside, Prefectural Route 377, is the old Route 220 over Horikiri Pass; the main road now runs through a tunnel, so follow the coast road to reach the station.
