About This Destination

A small takeaway tofu-sweets counter at the start of the path to Arashiyama's bamboo grove, about five minutes' walk from Randen Arashiyama Station. Its tofu soft serve, made with silken tofu as well as soy milk, is dense enough that the shop's sign says it won't fall out of an upside-down cone.

Kyozuan is a small takeaway counter at the start of the path to the Arashiyama bamboo grove, and it sells one thing most people come for: tofu soft serve. The shop's own sign says it will not fall out even if you turn the cone upside-down. That is a bold claim for ice cream in a Kyoto summer, and you will still want to eat it quickly, but it is noticeably denser than ordinary soft serve.

It is made with silken tofu rather than just soy milk, and the soy milk comes from Japanese soybeans the company buys from farmers around Kyoto. The taste is clean, with soy rather than cream up front. Plain costs 500 yen. The flavour this branch recommends is black-sesame kinako (580 yen), which is nuttier; a two-flavour swirl is 550 yen. If you have seen photos of a green matcha version, that one is sold only at the company's Fushimi Inari shop.

There is more on the menu than the cones. Soy-milk doughnuts come in bags of six for 400 yen, there is a soy-milk pudding, and two floats are sold only here, a black-sesame soy milk and a tofu melon soda. In summer there is yuzu shaved ice, in winter steamed pork buns.

Kyozuan was founded in 1998 and opened this shop the following year. The neighbourhood's tofu connection is much older. Saga's best-known tofu maker, Morika, has been making tofu here since the 1850s and supplies Zen temples including Tenryu-ji.

Two practical points. The soft serve contains milk as well as soy, so it is not vegan; the plain soy milk drink is the dairy-free option. And there is nowhere to sit. Hours are 10:00 to 17:00, with irregular closing days. Randen Arashiyama Station is about five minutes' walk away.

Food Options: The tofu soft serve comes plain (500 yen), as black-sesame kinako, this shop's recommendation (580 yen), or as a two-flavour swirl (550 yen); the matcha version is sold only at the Fushimi Inari shop. There are also soy-milk doughnuts, soy-milk pudding and two floats sold only here. It is a standing takeaway counter with no seats, and the soft serve contains milk, so it is not vegan.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does Kyozuan's soft serve not fall out of the cone?

Kyozuan says so on its own sign: the tofu soft serve will not fall out even upside-down. It is made with silken tofu as well as soy milk from Japanese soybeans, which makes it noticeably denser than ordinary soft serve. You will still want to eat it before it starts to melt.

Which flavours does the Arashiyama shop sell, and how much are they?

Plain tofu soft serve is 500 yen, black-sesame kinako (the Arashiyama shop's recommendation) is 580 yen, and a two-flavour swirl is 550 yen. The matcha version is sold only at Kyozuan's Fushimi Inari shop. Arashiyama also has two floats you cannot get elsewhere, black-sesame soy milk and tofu melon soda, plus soy-milk doughnuts and pudding.

Is Kyozuan's tofu soft serve vegan or dairy-free?

No. Kyozuan lists milk as well as soy among the soft serve's allergens (and black sesame for that flavour), so it is not vegan or dairy-free. If you avoid dairy, the plain soy milk drink lists only soy.

Where is Kyozuan, when is it open and can I sit down?

It is at the start of the path to the Arashiyama bamboo grove, about five minutes' walk from Randen Arashiyama Station. Hours are 10:00 to 17:00, with irregular closing days. It is a takeaway counter with no seats, so plan to eat standing or as you walk. The company was founded in 1998 and opened this shop in 1999.
