About This Destination

A UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of Kyoto's oldest Shinto shrines, founded in 678 AD, known for its distinctive cone-shaped ritual sand mounds called tatesuna.
Founded 678 AD, one of the oldest Shinto shrines in Kyoto. Dedicated to the thunder god Kamo Wakeikazuchi. UNESCO World Heritage. The distinctive feature: a pair of cone-shaped sand mounds (tatesuna) in front of the worship hall, representing sacred mountains and used in purification rituals. Grounds along the Kamo River include two National Treasure buildings from 1628. Together with sister shrine Shimogamo, hosts the Aoi Matsuri in May—Heian-period costumes, one of Kyoto's most elegant festivals.
