About This Destination

A Shinto shrine at the heart of Gion, center of the Gion Matsuri festival every July—one of Japan's three great festivals with elaborate float processions.
Yasaka Shrine (Gion-san to locals) has been at the eastern end of Shijo-dori since 656. Guardian deity of Gion, spiritual center of the Gion Matsuri—one of Japan's three great festivals, with float processions throughout July. Open 24 hours; at night hundreds of stone and bronze lanterns give it a particular atmosphere. Hatsumode (New Year's first visit) brings millions from across Kansai. Maruyama Park, Kyoto's most popular cherry blossom spot, is directly through the east gate.
