About This Destination
A bustling morning market just steps from Hakodate Station, famous for ultra-fresh seafood and live squid fishing.
Hakodate Morning Market has been operating since 1945, just one minute from JR Hakodate Station. Around 250 shops sell fresh seafood, dried goods, fruits, vegetables, and local specialties across an area of about 30,000 square meters. The market is famous for its crab, uni, and ikura, as well as the unique live squid fishing experience where visitors catch their own squid and have it prepared as sashimi on the spot. Numerous small restaurants serve seafood donburi (rice bowls) piled high with crab, salmon roe, and sea urchin at very reasonable prices. The market opens early in the morning and closes by early afternoon, making it the perfect first stop of the day.
