Zamami Island
About This Destination
Zamami is one of the two larger inhabited islands of the Kerama group, about 40 km west of Naha, and has been part of Keramashoto National Park since 2014. The water is the draw. Locals call the color Kerama blue, and it is clear enough that you can watch fish from the shore. Furuzamami Beach, on the east side, carries two stars in the Michelin Green Guide. Ama Beach, west of the port village, is where the tourism association says you are likely to meet sea turtles; watch them from a distance and do not touch or chase them. Swimming on your own is allowed only inside the marked areas at Ama, Furuzamami and Nishibama on Aka Island. Anywhere else, go with a guided tour. From early January to late March, humpback whales come here to breed, and spotters on the island's lookouts radio their positions to the boats. The village is small. There is no convenience store, most shops take cash only, and the clinic is closed on weekends and holidays. Many places to stay are not on the big booking sites, so book before you take the boat. Aka Island is 15 minutes away on the village boat if you want a quieter beach.

Can I visit Zamami as a day trip from Naha?
Yes, when the high-speed Queen Zamami is running. In the village's October 2026 schedule it reaches Zamami at 9:50 and leaves at 16:20, which gives about six and a half hours on the island, but it runs only until 19 October: it will be out of service for dock maintenance from 20 October to 3 December 2026. When only Ferry Zamami is running, you get at most about three hours on the island, and on some days much less, so stay the night instead. Check the monthly timetable on the village's ship page, and book your room before you go.
When can I see humpback whales from Zamami?
The Zamami Whale Watching Association ran tours from January 8 to March 25 in the 2026 season. A tour takes about 1 to 2 hours and costs 7,700 yen for adults, plus a 600 yen whale-search fee. Book by the day before, since sea conditions change.
What happens if the ferry is cancelled?
You wait for the next sailing. The boats are the only scheduled way on or off the island, and strong wind or high seas cancel them, most often when a typhoon passes. Check the operating status with the village (098-987-2614) on the day, and do not plan Zamami for the last day before a flight.
