Taketomi Island
About This Destination
Taketomi is the outer island most people see first, and the reason is the ferry: 10 to 15 minutes from Ishigaki, with a boat at least once an hour from early morning to evening. The island itself is small and flat, 9.2 km around, with one village in the middle. That village was selected in 1987 as a preservation district for groups of traditional buildings, and it still looks the part: low houses with shisa figures on their red tile roofs, walls of stacked coral stone, and lanes of white sand that residents sweep with brooms. About 310 people live here, and the houses are homes, not exhibits, so keep to the lanes and out of the yards. Kondoi Beach on the west side is shallow and calm, and the only beach where the town's tourism association says swimming is possible; there are no lifeguards. Next door, Kaiji Beach is where people look for star sand by pressing a palm into the sand along the rocks. The currents there are strong, so do not swim. The drawback is the number of visitors, around 500,000 a year by the island foundation's count. From late morning to mid afternoon the lanes tend to fill with tour groups and bikes. Stay the night, or catch the first boat, and the village is quiet again.

Get DirectionsFrequently Asked Questions
How much is the Taketomi Island entry fee and how do I pay it?
300 yen per person. Buy the Utsugumi ticket from the machine at the Euglena Ishigaki Port Remote Island Terminal (by the exit between fast-boat berths 4 and 5), from the machine in the Kariyushi building at Taketomi Port, or at sales points on the island. The money goes to the Taketomijima Regional Foundation for conservation work.
Can I visit Taketomi as a day trip from Ishigaki?
Yes, easily. Two companies between them run 18 departures a day from Ishigaki on the timetables in force from October 2026, and the crossing takes 10 to 15 minutes. Half a day is enough for the village and Kondoi Beach by bike. The last boats back leave Taketomi at 17:50. Staying overnight is worth it if you want the village without the crowds; inns are small, so book ahead, and if a family-run inn does not answer the phone, the town's tourism association suggests calling in the early evening.
Can I still ride a water buffalo cart, and can I take star sand home?
Yes, through Yaeyama Kanko Ferry: at the time of writing it sells a water buffalo cart tour of the village as a package from Ishigaki, boat included, at 5,200 yen for adults. Nitta Kanko lists its own cart rides as suspended, and Taketomi Kotsu's bus tour does not include one. Star sand is found on Kaiji Beach by pressing your palm into the sand near the rocks. The town's tourism association says taking animals and plants off any of the town's islands is prohibited in principle and can be punished by law, so look and leave it there unless you have checked otherwise.
