About This Destination

A 2.9-kilometer surf beach between Inamuragasaki and Koshigoe, with Enoshima and, on clear days, Mt. Fuji to the west. It is not one of Kamakura's swimming beaches. At its western end, the railway crossing by Kamakura-Kokomae Station draws crowds of anime fans, and photographers are asked to stay off the road.

The Enoden runs right along the top of this beach, and for a few stations the windows are full of sea. Shichirigahama is a strip of sand about 2.9 kilometers long between the Inamuragasaki headland and Koshigoe, backed by low cliffs and Route 134. The seabed is a wave-cut rock shelf, which breaks the swell into the irregular waves surfers come for, and it is not one of the three beaches Kamakura opens for swimming each summer. Edo-period print artists drew the view west to Enoshima with Mt. Fuji behind it, and you still get that on clear winter days. At the western end is Kamakura-Kokomae Station and the level crossing that appears in the opening of the anime Slam Dunk. It is now one of the busiest photo spots in Kamakura. The city has set aside a fenced photo area for it in Koshigoe Rakko Park, next to the station. Do not stand in the road or on the tracks, and do not enter the school grounds or private property.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I swim at Shichirigahama?

It is not a designated swimming beach. Kamakura opens three swimming beaches, Zaimokuza, Yuigahama and Koshigoe, from July 1 to August 31, and Shichirigahama's rock shelf and broken waves suit surfers, not swimmers.

What are the rules for photographing the Kamakura-Kokomae crossing?

Use the fenced photo area in Koshigoe Rakko Park next to the station. Do not stop on the road, sidewalk or tracks, do not enter Kamakura High School or private land, and take your rubbish with you.

When can I see Mt. Fuji from the beach?

On clear days, most often between November and February, Mt. Fuji appears behind Enoshima to the west. Late afternoon brings the sunset over the same view.
