About This Destination
Historic seaside city south of Tokyo, home to the Great Buddha, ancient temples, and beautiful beaches.
Kamakura is a historic coastal city about an hour south of Tokyo that served as the seat of Japan's first military government from 1185 to 1333. The city's most famous landmark is the Great Buddha (Daibutsu) at Kotoku-in, a 13-meter bronze statue that has sat in the open air since a tsunami destroyed its hall in the 15th century. The city has over 65 temples and shrines, including the impressive Tsurugaoka Hachimangu shrine and the hydrangea-lined pathways of Meigetsu-in and Hase-dera. Kamakura also offers beautiful beaches popular for surfing in summer. The charming Komachi-dori shopping street near the station is lined with cafes, boutiques, and souvenir shops. The Enoden railway line along the coast to Enoshima island is a scenic journey. Easily reached from Tokyo via JR Yokosuka Line from Tokyo Station in about 55 minutes.
