About This Destination

A hillside temple in Kamakura celebrated for its towering gilded Kannon statue, lush hydrangea gardens, and sweeping views of Sagami Bay.
Hase-dera is one of Kamakura's most beloved temples, perched on a hillside overlooking the coast of Sagami Bay. The temple's main attraction is its magnificent 9.18-meter tall gilded wooden statue of Jūichimen Kannon, an eleven-headed manifestation of the goddess of mercy, which is one of the largest wooden Buddhist statues in Japan. Established in 736, the temple predates the Kamakura period and contains a wealth of historical artifacts. The temple grounds are arranged across two levels, with the upper terrace offering a panoramic observation deck with stunning ocean views. Hase-dera is particularly famous for its hydrangea gardens, which burst into color during the rainy season in June, drawing visitors from across the country. The Benten-kutsu cave, carved into the hillside, contains small statues dedicated to Benzaiten, the goddess of fortune.
