Get DirectionsFrequently Asked Questions
How do I get to the Oya History Museum?
Take a Kanto Bus from JR Utsunomiya Station to the Shiryokan-iriguchi stop, about 30 minutes and around 460 yen. The museum is a short walk from the bus stop.
What is the Oya History Museum known for?
It is a huge underground quarry where soft Oya stone was cut by hand from the 1910s onward; the same stone was used by Frank Lloyd Wright for the Imperial Hotel. The hall covers 20,000 m² and reaches up to 60 m deep, and is used for concerts and film shoots. The cliff-carved Oya Kannon Buddha stands nearby.
What are the hours and admission, and what should I bring?
Admission is 800 yen and hours are 9:00 to 17:00, closing at 16:30 from December to March and closed Tuesdays in winter. The hall stays around 8°C year-round, so bring an extra layer even in summer.
