About This Destination

Eight crystal-clear spring ponds fed by Mount Fuji snowmelt filtration, designated a UNESCO World Heritage component and Natural Monument of Japan.
Oshino Hakkai is a set of eight pristine spring ponds in the village of Oshino, located between Lake Kawaguchiko and Lake Yamanakako in the Fuji Five Lakes region. The ponds are fed by snowmelt from Mount Fuji that has been naturally filtered through layers of volcanic rock over approximately 20 years before surfacing. The water is remarkably clear, with visibility reaching the bottom of each pond, and maintains a constant temperature of around 13 degrees Celsius year-round. The surrounding village retains a traditional thatched-roof atmosphere with souvenir shops and food stalls. Waku Pond, the largest and deepest of the eight, is the most impressive, while the smaller ponds each have their own legends and character.
