About This Destination

A vivid blue five-story pagoda rises above Nakayamadera, a temple closely associated with prayers for safe childbirth. Its busy devotional life and hillside precincts make a distinctive stop on the Hankyu Takarazuka line, close to Nakayama-kannon Station.

Nakayamadera is an active pilgrimage temple at the foot of the hills in Takarazuka. It is particularly associated with prayers for safe childbirth, and families arriving to pray or give thanks are part of its everyday atmosphere. The temple also belongs to the Saigoku Kannon pilgrimage, linking a local visit with a much wider religious route.

The blue Shoryuto pagoda is the most immediately recognizable feature. Rebuilt in 2017 using traditional timber techniques, it is a modern reconstruction rather than an untouched ancient tower. Its unusual color and decorative details reward a closer look from the surrounding precincts. Moving between the halls gives a sense of the temple’s continuing devotional role beyond the familiar photograph of the pagoda.

Hankyu Nakayama-kannon Station is very close to the entrance, while JR Nakayamadera is farther away on foot. A visit to the main precincts is different from walking into the hills toward the Okunoin, which requires additional time and preparation. Respect prayer spaces and photography notices, particularly when families are taking part in ceremonies.
