About This Destination

A flat 4.7 km hiking trail along the original Fukuchiyama Line route through the Mukogawa Gorge, passing six pitch-dark railway tunnels and old iron bridges between Namaze and Takedao stations — famous for cherry blossoms in spring and red maples in autumn.
The JR Fukuchiyama Line Disused Railway Trail follows the original single-track route that hugged the Mukogawa River gorge until 1986, when the line was rerouted through long modern tunnels and the old tracks were abandoned. After years as an unofficial (and technically off-limits) adventure, JR West formally reopened the path to the public in 2016, and it has become one of the most beloved easy hikes in the Kansai region. The roughly 4.7 km route runs between Namaze Station in Nishinomiya and Takedao Station in Takarazuka, and because it was built as a railway it stays almost perfectly flat the entire way — suitable for families and casual walkers, though the gravel-and-sleeper surface calls for proper shoes rather than sandals. The highlight is passing through six original brick-and-stone tunnels, the longest over 400 metres, which have no lighting whatsoever and turn pitch-black in the middle: a flashlight or headlamp is genuinely essential. Between the tunnels the trail crosses old iron railway bridges with the clear Mukogawa River and forested cliffs below, and the gorge transforms with the seasons — cherry blossoms and fresh green in spring, deep red and gold maples in autumn. Many hikers finish at the far end near Takedao Onsen, a quiet riverside hot-spring hamlet, making it easy to reward the walk with a soak before catching the train home.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I really need a flashlight for the Fukuchiyama Line trail?

Yes — it is essential, not optional. The six tunnels have no lighting at all, and the longer ones (over 400 metres) become completely pitch-black in the middle where you cannot see the ground or the walls. A smartphone light works in a pinch but a proper handheld flashlight or headlamp is far better, and a headlamp keeps your hands free. Walk slowly and watch the uneven gravel underfoot.

How long does the Fukuchiyama Line disused railway hike take?

The trail is about 4.7 km and most people walk it in 1.5 to 2 hours one way, plus stops for photos at the tunnels and bridges. Because it is almost completely flat, the pace is relaxed rather than strenuous. Add the 15-minute walk from Namaze Station to the trailhead, and budget around half a day if you also plan to relax at Takedao Onsen at the end.

When is the best season to walk the trail?

Late March to early April brings cherry blossoms along the Mukogawa Gorge, and mid to late November brings spectacular red and gold autumn foliage — these are the two peak seasons and also the busiest. Fresh green early summer is lovely and far quieter. Avoid right after heavy rain, when the trail can be muddy and slippery and the river runs high; the path occasionally closes for safety after storms, so check the Takarazuka tourism site before going.

Is the trail suitable for children and beginners?

Yes. Because the route follows an old railway it is almost entirely flat with no climbing, which makes it one of the most family-friendly hikes in the area. That said, it is unpaved with gravel and old wooden sleepers, so wear closed shoes with good grip, keep small children close in the dark tunnels, and bring your own water as there are no facilities along the way. Strollers are not recommended on the uneven surface.
