About This Destination

Known as the 'Mt Fuji of the San'in Region', Mount Daisen is a striking volcanic peak offering excellent hiking trails, ski slopes, and ancient temple forests.
Mount Daisen rises dramatically to 1,729 meters and its symmetrical western profile has earned it the nickname 'Hoki Fuji' after the old province name. The most popular hiking route to the summit takes about three hours up through one of Japan's largest beech forests, rewarding climbers with panoramic views of the Sea of Japan and the Chugoku mountain range. Daisenji Temple, founded in 718, sits partway up the mountain along an atmospheric stone-paved approach lined with ancient cedar trees. In winter, the mountain transforms into a ski destination with several resorts on its northern slopes. The surrounding plateau is excellent for cycling in summer and offers some of Japan's finest fresh milk and dairy products from local farms.
