About This Destination

Japan's largest coastal sand dunes stretching along the Sea of Japan, offering camel rides and paragliding.
The Tottori Sand Dunes are Japan's largest coastal dune system, stretching approximately 16 kilometers along the Sea of Japan coast and reaching up to 2 kilometers inland. Formed over 100,000 years by sediment from the Sendai River and wind from the Sea of Japan, the dunes create a landscape unique in Japan. Activities include camel rides, sandboarding, paragliding, and fat-tire cycling. The adjacent Sand Museum features elaborate sand sculptures by international artists that change annually. Wind-created ripple patterns called fumon are particularly beautiful in the early morning.
