About This Destination

A stunning bay dotted with over 260 pine-covered islands, celebrated as one of Japan's Three Most Scenic Views.
Matsushima Bay has been celebrated as one of Japan's Three Most Scenic Views (Nihon Sankei) for centuries, alongside Miyajima and Amanohashidate. The bay contains over 260 small islands covered with pine trees, creating an endlessly varied seascape. The bay is freely accessible from multiple viewpoints along the shore. A 50-minute sightseeing cruise offers views from the water. The area also features several historic temples, including Zuiganji, a Zen temple dating from 828 and designated a National Treasure, and Entsuin with its beautiful moss-covered garden. Godaido, a small temple on the waterfront, is free to visit and offers excellent bay views. The area is a 6-minute walk from JR Matsushima-Kaigan Station, about 40 minutes from Sendai.
