About This Destination

One of the most important shrines in the Tohoku region, perched on a hilltop overlooking Matsushima Bay. Known for its ancient cedar trees and spectacular cherry blossoms, including rare late-blooming salt cherry trees.
Crowning a hilltop with sweeping views over Matsushima Bay, Shiogama Shrine has served as the spiritual guardian of the Tohoku region since ancient times. The dramatic approach climbs 202 stone steps through towering cedars, while the main hall enshrines deities of safe childbirth and sea navigation worshipped by fishermen for generations. The shrine grounds burst with cherry blossoms each spring, including rare late-blooming salt cherry trees found nowhere else in Japan.
