How do I get to Shiogama Shrine?
Take the JR Senseki Line from Sendai to Hon-Shiogama Station, about 30 minutes and around 330 yen, then walk about 15 minutes to the shrine. The omotesando approach climbs 202 stone steps.
What is Shiogama Shrine known for?
It is a hilltop guardian shrine of fishing and safe childbirth overlooking Shiogama port, the gateway to Matsushima Bay cruises. Its museum holds swords designated as national treasures, and the grounds have about 300 cherry trees including the Shiogama-zakura, a designated natural monument whose blossoms have more than 40 petals. The sushi street below claims one of Japan's highest densities of sushi shops.
Is there a fee and what are the opening hours?
Entry to the grounds is free, open from 5:00 to 18:00. The shrine museum costs 200 yen; visit in mid to late April to see the Shiogama-zakura in bloom.
