About This Destination

A National Treasure known as the 'Black Castle', one of only 12 original castles and the sole surviving keep in the San'in region.
Matsue Castle, also known as Chidori-jo (Plover Castle), is one of only five castles whose main keep holds National Treasure status. Built in 1611 and standing at 30 meters, it is the second largest and third tallest among Japan's original castle towers. The imposing black exterior gives it a distinctive and photogenic appearance. Inside, visitors can climb steep wooden stairs through multiple floors of exhibits displaying samurai armor, weapons, and castle history. From the top floor, views extend over Matsue city, Lake Shinji, and the surrounding mountains. The moat surrounding the castle offers popular pleasure boat tours. Nearby, the former samurai district of Shiomi Nawate preserves the atmosphere of Edo-period Matsue.
