About This Destination

An Edo-period castle in the heart of Kitakyushu, notable for its distinctive karazukuri architecture where the upper floors extend beyond the lower ones. The castle is closely associated with legendary swordsman Miyamoto Musashi.
Kokura Castle was originally built by the feudal lord Hosokawa Tadaoki between 1602 and 1608 and features the rare karazukuri architectural style, in which the fourth and fifth floors extend outward beyond the lower levels, giving the tower a distinctive silhouette. The castle was held by the Ogasawara clan for over two centuries before being burned down during the conflict between the Kokura and Choshu clans in 1866, and the current concrete reconstruction dates from 1959. Inside, interactive exhibits tell the story of the castle and Kokura's development as a prosperous castle town, with connections to the legendary swordsman Miyamoto Musashi who spent his final years in the area. The surrounding Katsuyama Park is a popular spot for cherry blossom viewing in spring, and the adjacent Riverwalk Kitakyushu complex offers modern shopping and dining. Kokura Castle is also illuminated at night, making evening visits particularly atmospheric.
