About This Destination

Revered shrine dedicated to the deity of learning, attracting millions of students seeking academic success.
Dazaifu Tenmangu enshrines Sugawara no Michizane, the deity of learning and culture, and is one of the most important Tenmangu shrines in Japan. The grounds feature over 6,000 plum trees that bloom beautifully in early spring, honoring Michizane's love of plum blossoms. The approach to the shrine is lined with shops selling traditional umegae mochi rice cakes. The treasure house contains important cultural properties, and the modern art museum on the grounds was designed by architect Kuma Kengo.
