About This Destination

One of just 12 original castles, Kochi is the only castle in Japan to retain both its original tower and complete palace buildings.
Kochi Castle is a remarkable survivor among Japan's feudal castles, being the only castle to retain both its original main tower and the complete Honmaru palace buildings. Originally built in the early 1600s by the Yamauchi clan, the castle was destroyed by fire in 1727 and faithfully rebuilt by 1753. The four-story tower offers commanding views over the city, while the adjacent palace gives visitors a rare glimpse into the living quarters of a feudal lord. The castle sits in a pleasant park with good cherry blossom viewing in spring. The famous Sunday market stretches along the street below the castle, one of the oldest and longest street markets in Japan. Open 9:00 to 17:00 year-round.
