About This Destination

Kashima Shrine is one of Japan's oldest and most venerated shrines, dedicated to the deity of martial arts and thunder, with a sacred forest and ancient cedar trees.
Kashima Shrine has stood for over 2,600 years according to tradition, making it one of Japan's most ancient places of worship. Dedicated to Takemikazuchi-no-Okami, the deity of martial arts, swordsmanship, and thunder, the shrine is deeply revered by martial artists and athletes who come to pray for victory and strength. The shrine grounds encompass a vast sacred forest with towering cedar trees, some over 1,000 years old, creating a profoundly peaceful atmosphere quite different from urban shrines. The Treasure House displays Japan's oldest straight sword (a National Treasure) and numerous offerings from warriors throughout history. A deer park within the grounds houses sacred deer believed to be divine messengers, and the nearby Mitarashi Pond is a mysteriously clear spring where visitors can purify themselves.
